STANLEY KEG RECAP: Collins, Doogan Lead Bruins To 4-1 Victory:

CAMBRIDGE - Billy Doogan had a hat trick, Vinny Mannering added two assists, and Max Collins put on a clinic in net as the Bruins won the Fifth Stanley Keg World Championship in Cambridge today, 4-1, over the Thrashers.

For the first time, the game was played in a full-court layout with five players and a goalie per side. With no substitutes for either team, the teams agreed to limit the game to two 20-minute periods. The result was a more strategic, wide-open game that afforded the players more opportunities to move the ball and set up crossing passes.

For the Thrashers, Ed Cash put up his typically strong performance in goal, making a handful of his own fantastic saves. But the story in net was Collins, looking much like Tim Thomas and playing just as well.

His ability to cut off passes from behind the net meant that the Thrashers couldn’t get much going in the crease, and his stellar positioning limited their shots from the point. Nick Belesis and Kevin Mannering were able to weave through the Bruins defense on occasion, but Collins frustrated both more than once.

The Bruins scored the first four goals behind flying offensive play from the forward line of Doogan and brothers Craig and Evan DeMarco. Doogan scored two goals in the first frame, while Craig DeMarco made up for an ill-fated collision with Cash in front of the Thrashers net early in the second period by scoring the team’s third goal. Doogan’s hat trick came on a tip in after a two-on-one opportunity left the Thrashers defense reeling.

After gradually increasing the pressure on Collins as the game went on, the Thrashers finally managed to get on the board with a late goal from Ed D’Addario. But it was too little, too late, as the Bruins held on for the win in front of an estimated crowd of one.

CAN I PLAY? Yes. Just show up. Preferably with your own equipment. (And, if you own one, an Atlanta Thrashers home jersey from last season. Don’t ask.)
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE ANY? You seriously don’t have a hockey stick?
NOPE. Christ. Fine, there will probably be a spare, somewhere. You inconsiderate jerk.

It takes the strength of two men to properly equip a goaltender for the heat of battle. Three if you count the goaltender. Then again, he’s one nutshot away from making it two and a half men, and playing the role of Angus T. Jones. No Stanley Keg On January 1

Hey guys. So after a lot of hard work and a lot of deliberation, we’ve decided to cancel the Stanley Keg Winter Classic that was going to take place in Hampton, NH on New Year’s Day. THIS DOESN’T AFFECT THE NEXT BOSTON STANLEY KEG GAMES ON JANUARY 28. Just wanted to make that clear.

Here’s the thing. Putting on these games takes a maximum amount of promotional effort. Trying to convince people to show up really has to be done on an individual basis, and it’s only me doing anything to promote these games. Nobody else. I spend a good two weeks before each event trying to promote and organize these things, which can mean anything from a couple of tweets to buying T-shirts in bulk for everyone like I did last time.

That being said, putting in all that work to have about seven people commit to showing up isn’t an acceptable tradeoff. Games with that many people just aren’t going to be very fun. Add in the inevitable New Year’s hangovers and it just doesn’t make any sense at all.

From day one we knew it would be an ambitious task to try and convince people to play street hockey on a football Sunday after a holiday night in a rink in New Hampshire, no matter how nice the rink. When people started making other plans and getting noncommittal, our fears were realized. Of course, as an event planner, I’m bitterly disappointed and frustrated, especially since the weather is shaping up to be beautiful that day. But hey, at least we tried, right?

Again, there will be another Stanley Keg on January 28. It’ll be at John Ahern Field in Cambridge, like all the rest. We hope it’ll be a well-attended event like the inaugural one, which saw 17 people come out and have a great time. We hope you’ll show up, too.
